Look at This Fucking Hipster

Been too busy to post lately (which I suspect is the case with the rest of the gang as well), but this one's just too good to sit on any longer. It's a simple photo collection of the modern day tragically hip in their natural environment. I don't really get the joke about the Beans!! guy (well, I get it -- but I'm not 100% why it's supposed to be funny) but there are some classics hiding in here.

ps -- If all this Internet technology is too much for you to handle, just hold on. The guy who runs the site recently signed a book deal for all of this.

Women Be Different From Men?

TV advertisers seem to think so..

Almost Better than the Woomba

I just LOOOOOOVE the creative shit people do with the most random household objects. Here we can watch what happens when you sit a Roomba inside a hoola hoop and strap some markers on to it.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/sgoralnick/3081971953/

(btw- the Woomba is pretty effing hillarious, too... http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/woomba/229062/)

Three cheers for bringing a woman's touch to HRTotM!

Rush Limbaugh Karaoke

Two things about this clip. First, despite the presence of the Roots -- Fallon's show is still not that entertaining. He seems under-rehearsed, ideas seem sorta tossed out, and the studio audience still doesn't seem like they've "bought in" yet. These things take time, but all that being said -- it feels shakey, you know?

Second, This idea needs to be picked up and taken to places where people drink before you get the microphone (like Kimmel's show, for instance), because it should be tons funnier than this (even though I did get a chuckle out of it).

Who Pooped.org

It's the new game that's not only fun for the whole family, but educational too!

The last time I took my son to the Jacksonville Zoo, there was a more analog version of this that thankfully was encased behind glass, but what that luckily not-hands on version was clearly missing was the utterly poop-tastic sound effects that have made this one of my son's new favorite websites.

Truth be told, there's really only so long I can look at this without wondering where the 2 girls and their cup went -- but it's still worth a giggle, and you can (if you want) get away with showing it to your kids, which you can't always do with many of the other sites we feature on here.

With a Name Like Smuckers..

Pretty much why you should never let me pick the restaurant when we break for lunch.

Man... I feel bad for my vendors

As a graphic designer, I'm used to haggling with my vendors for the best prices. After watching this, I feel like calling them to apologize for the behavior of my entire industry...

For the Cat Lovers (hell...even the haters will enjoy)

I have never been a fan of most cats (the ONE I like- you know who you are) or cat humor, but I truly laughed out loud watching this. I wonder if it would work on my dog?

Can't Take Them Out Anywhere

I love me some baseball. It's hands-down my favorite sport, and now that the kids are old enough to play, summertime is pretty much baseball time at my house. But even if you don't know a bunt from a balk, chances are you know the words to "Take Me Out to the Ballgame", right?

See, baseball fans have this odd habit of asking to go to a game, in song form, during the middle of the seventh inning (commonly called the "seventh inning stretch"). The music is piped in, we link arms with one another, and white-guy sway our way through an off-key folk song if there ever was one. In Chicago, this ritual took on special significance, as beloved broadcaster Harry Caray would lead the crowd at Wrigley Field by leaning out of his booth and directing with his free hand. (Also of note, he's credited for starting the tradition of inserting the home team's nickname in place of the words "the home team", a practice emulated all over the country.)

So, since Caray's death in 1998, it's become a kind-of meta tradition to invite Chicagocentric celebrities to come and lead the crowd at Wrigley.

Mostly, they're awful at it.

Here's a few of my favorites:

We'll start with the gold standard - here's Harry Caray, in 1985.

Here's Eddie Vedder, who screws it up despite claiming to "sing it for Harry". My favorite part of this is his apparent appeal to "buy [him] some peanuts and crack".

NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon doesn't even really try here. Come on guy, put the song on your freakin' iPod, click "repeat", and listen to it while YOU DRIVE IN CIRCLES FOR FIVE HOURS.

Danika Patrick does a little bit better, but could use some time with a vocal coach. Like, two minutes. Or maybe just pass one in the hallway. She's cute, though... just watch it while muted.

Speaking of things to watch while muted, former American Idol contestant Kellie Pickler makes matters worse by hanging around in the booth after screwing up the words (to the WGN news desk's horrified amusement).

Pat from WGN mentioned Ozzy, so I guess I'll throw him in, as well - though like Gordon, this barely counts as an attempt.

And perhaps the most amazing minute of internet video you'll ever see, ladies and gentlemen, your idol and mine, Mr. T.

That's "I pity the Pirates!" at the end, there. Mr T. rules.

Now let's get some runs!

I Come Highly Recommended

Hello there internets. Welcome to my first posting here on Highly Recommended Thing Of The Moment. I'm a friend of
Sartorical's and as I'm always sending him things to recommend. Ya see, I'm currently out of work due to this here recession so I've got LOTS of time to waste and find fun things on the internet (thanks again, Al Gore). So he figured he'd cut out the middle man (that being him) and now I get to post myself! Wheeee... someone else's laziness finally reaps me rewards. So hello hello all ye readers... and I look forward to providing you with some fun things for your viewing pleasure.

My first post is the link that got me this blogging schindig in the first place - http://hrrrthrrr.tumblr.com/. I first came across the blog specifically for the AWESOME soda bottle moustaches (I seem to have a thing for moustaches... this photo of mine is a personal favorite - ,) but came to find so much more to look around and enjoy. The website's design itself is quite lovely and crafty. And the content itself has a lot of great finds, well designed products and graphics, and fun humor. And as a graphic designer who loves injecting humor in her work, I'll admit, it makes me green with envy at times! Enjoy!!

Feedback

If you've ever driven a Prius, you'll know the value of feedback. All of a sudden you're looking for downhills and drafting opportunities, all in an attempt to make your mileage meter increase.

Similarly, FitDay is a fantastic free weight-loss tool. It combines a food diary with your personal information, giving you a constant view of how many calories you've consumed vs. what you've burned. It also lets you adjust your ratio of protein and carbohydrates to fat without using a chemlab. It's a good way to be honest with yourself and make sure you account for your consumption.

We at Highly Recommended love our food. We also want to live to be annoyingly old. This is a good tool for reconciling the two.
